Medical Doctors (MD's) certified by the American Board of Dermatology are scientist physicians with an additional four years or more of intensive training in diagnosis, treatment, and surgery of the skin, scalp and hair. In addition to satisfactorily completing their post graduate years of training, they must pass a rigorous certifying examination plus demonstrate ongoing continuing education and competence to maintain their board certified status.

There are twenty-four certifying boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties that encompass the entire field of medicine. The American Board of Medical Specialties is a non-profit organization solely dedicated to ensuring quality medical care in The United States. Of these twenty-four certifying boards, there are two boards that confer expertise in hair restoration, The American Board of Dermatology and The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

While there are several other boards purported to demonstrate expertise in cosmetic surgery and hair restoration, only the above two are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. In the state of California it is illegal for physicians to advertise their certification by other boards not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Prospective hair transplant patients are urged to consider physicians certified by the American Board of Dermatology as the premier physicians for hair restoration. As the maxim states, “There is no substitute.”
